Cloud InfrastructureAI & Machine LearningInfrastructure & Public Works

In a bold move, Google and Constellation Energy are injecting fresh nuclear power into the PJM grid, powered by cutting‑edge AI.

TL;DR
• Google and Constellation add 890 MW nuclear capacity to PJM, boosting reliability.
• AI tools will streamline upgrades, cut costs, and protect infrastructure.
• The deal supports jobs, affordability, and a cleaner energy future.

Summary
Google and Constellation Energy have sealed a 20‑year power purchase deal to add 890 MW of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection, complemented by a 15‑year supply contract for an additional 2,700 MW. The partnership leverages Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to create an “AI for Energy” framework that accelerates uprates, optimizes dispatch, and hardens critical infrastructure. Investments total over $4.3 billion, sustain 4,400 existing jobs and generate roughly 7,200 construction positions, while targeting the reliability needs of 67 million PJM customers.
• Deploy AI‑driven site selection and power‑flow modeling to shorten uprate engineering cycles and lower capital costs.
• Implement asset‑health monitoring and scenario optimization to keep plants operating at peak output as demand rises.
• Use defense‑grade Google Cloud services to secure operational‑technology networks and improve grid resilience.

The agreement focuses on nuclear uprates—modernizing turbines, steam generators, and digital controls—to deliver firm, carbon‑free megawatts without the lengthy siting and interconnection delays of new builds. The 890 MW uplift matches the output of several small modular reactors or a large conventional reactor, aligning with the federal UPRISE program’s goal of maximizing existing nuclear assets. Revenue certainty is provided through the 2,700 MW, 15‑year supply component, ensuring continued operation of current generation assets while avoiding resource withdrawals from the grid.

A strategic framework extends beyond PJM, tasking both firms with evaluating clean generation, storage, and demand‑response projects nationwide. The framework outlines commercial structures and policy pathways to scale additional clean technologies, prioritizing near‑term opportunities in the Mid‑Atlantic and Midwest. By embedding Gemini Enterprise workflows into Constellation’s core operations, the collaboration aims to reduce infrastructure costs, improve performance, and protect the bulk electric system, thereby supporting affordable, resilient power for homes and businesses over the coming decades.

Constellation Energy, a Fortune 200 power producer with 55 GW of diversified capacity, serves roughly 2.5 million customers, including 80 % of the Fortune 100. Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, contributes its cloud and AI expertise to the energy sector. Together, they present a model for private‑sector investment and technology integration that can adapt to evolving demand, regulatory environments, and emerging clean‑energy innovations, positioning the PJM grid for long‑term stability and growth.

How will this partnership shape the next decade of energy resilience and innovation?
